Envelope sizes
Pick the size printed on your box of envelopes. Each page of the PDF is exactly that size, long side across.
| Envelope | Size | Usually for |
|---|---|---|
| #10 | 4-1/8" × 9-1/2" | Business letters |
| #9 | 3-7/8" × 8-7/8" | Reply envelopes |
| #6¾ | 3-5/8" × 6-1/2" | Personal and remittance |
| Monarch | 3-7/8" × 7-1/2" | Personal stationery |
| A2 | 4-3/8" × 5-3/4" | Note cards and RSVP cards |
| A6 | 4-3/4" × 6-1/2" | 4 × 6 cards and photos |
| A7 | 5-1/4" × 7-1/4" | 5 × 7 invitations and cards |
| 6 × 9 | 6" × 9" | Booklets and brochures |
| DL | 110 × 220 mm | Letters folded in three (A4) |
| C5 | 162 × 229 mm | A4 folded once, A5 |
| C6 | 114 × 162 mm | Cards, A4 folded twice |
Very large envelopes such as 9 × 12 and C4 are not included: most home printers cannot feed anything wider than a sheet of Letter or A4 paper.
Where the address goes
The recipient's address is printed in the lower middle of the envelope, the stamp goes in the top right corner and your return address in the top left. That is where post offices' sorting machines look for them.
The bottom 5/8 inch is left empty on purpose: the post office prints a barcode there, and an address that runs into that strip can be read wrongly or sent for hand sorting. Business envelopes use the standard address block, starting a little left of center; invitation sizes such as A7 and A2 center the address, which you can change with the Align setting.
How to feed envelopes into your printer
- In the print dialog, set the paper size to your envelope ("Envelope #10", "DL" and so on) and the scale to 100% or "Actual size". If it is not in the list, choose a custom size and type the measurements from the table above.
- Use the rear or manual feed tray if your printer has one, and slide the paper guides in until they touch the envelope. Most trays have a small envelope picture showing which side faces up and where the flap goes.
- Print one envelope first. If the address comes out upside down, turn the envelope around; if it is on the back, turn it over. Then print the rest the same way.
- Feed a few envelopes at a time rather than a full stack, so they don't jam or crease.
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The address is upside down | Turn the envelope around so the other end goes in first. |
| It printed on the back | Turn the envelope over. |
| It is sideways, cut off or tiny in a corner | The paper size in the print dialog is not the envelope. Choose the envelope size and print at 100%. |
| The envelope jams or comes out creased | Use the rear or manual tray, feed one or two at a time, and flatten any curled flaps first. |
| The ink smudges | Glossy or coated envelopes dry slowly in an inkjet. Let them dry flat, or use plain paper envelopes. |
Envelopes or labels?
Printing on the envelope looks best, especially for invitations. For a large mailing, or a printer that struggles with thick envelopes, address labels are quicker: 30 at a time on a 5160 sheet, and you can print your return address on small return address labels. Both work from the same spreadsheet, and you can remove duplicate addresses before you print either.
Envelope questions
Can I print addresses on envelopes from Excel?
Yes. Upload the .xlsx or .csv file, or paste the cells, and every row becomes one envelope. Duplicate addresses can be removed and ZIP codes that lost their leading zero are repaired on the way. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Which way round do I put the envelope in the printer?
It depends on the printer, so check with one envelope first. Most printers take envelopes in the rear or manual feed tray, and there is usually a small envelope picture on the tray showing which side faces up and where the flap goes. If the address comes out upside down, turn the envelope around; if it lands on the back, turn it over.
What paper size do I choose in the print dialog?
The envelope itself: "Envelope #10", "DL", "C5" and so on, with the scale at 100% or "Actual size". Each page of the PDF is already the envelope size. If your printer does not list it, choose a custom size and type the measurements shown in the tool.
Can I add a return address?
Yes. Type it in the return address box and it is printed small in the top left corner of every envelope. If you would rather use stickers, return address labels such as 5167 hold 80 to a sheet.
Can I use a script font for wedding invitations?
Yes. Choose Script or Handwritten above the preview. A7 and A2 invitation envelopes center the address by default, which suits a script font. A name with letters beyond the Western European ones, such as Ł or Cyrillic, is printed in the plain Sans font, because the script fonts do not have them.
Is it free, and is there a watermark or a limit?
It is free, with no watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many envelopes you print.
