Which A4 label size do I need?

The number on the pack decides it. If you are buying rather than using up a pack, the choice comes down to how much text each label has to hold and how many you need from one sheet.

• L7160 — 63.5 × 38.1 mm, 21 per sheet. The standard A4 address label, and the direct equivalent of the US 5160.
• L7163 — 99.1 × 38.1 mm, 14 per sheet. The same height but full width, so long street names stay on one line. The most common parcel label.
• L7165 — 99.1 × 67.7 mm, 8 per sheet. Large enough to read across a sorting room; used for parcels and mailers.
• L7651 — 38.1 × 21.2 mm, 65 per sheet. Return addresses, jar labels and price stickers.
• L7162 — 99.1 × 33.9 mm, 16 per sheet, and L7161 — 63.5 × 46.6 mm, 18 per sheet.

L, J and the number on your pack

Avery sells the same sheet under more than one code. L is the laser version and J is the inkjet one, so L7160 and J8160 are the same 21-label layout — the difference is the adhesive and the coating, not the geometry. LR codes are the recycled version of the same sheet.

That matters when you buy: use laser sheets in a laser printer and inkjet sheets in an inkjet. The wrong coating smudges in an inkjet, and the wrong adhesive can melt inside a laser fuser.

Do not print an A4 template on Letter paper

A4 is 210 × 297 mm and US Letter is 216 × 279 mm — narrower and taller. Printing an A4 template on Letter paper means the driver either scales it, which moves every label by a growing amount down the page, or clips the bottom row. Set the paper size to A4 in the print dialog and print at 100%.
